How Seniors Can Stay Healthy and Safe at Home

In an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, most everything in our lives has changed over the past few weeks. From how we work to how we socialize, staying healthy and safe is now everyone’s top priority. And while respiratory diseases can affect almost anyone, those older than 65 are one of the most at-risk communities.

Steps Seniors Can Take to Protect Themselves from Respiratory Illnesses

Stay home, stay safe.

The best way seniors can protect themselves is by staying home. By minimizing person-to-person contact, seniors can significantly reduce their chances of catching most diseases or illnesses.

Wash your hands often.

When should seniors be washing their hands? As often as possible!

If they have to run out for an essential errand, it’s important that seniors wash their hands with warm water and soap immediately after returning home. They should also be washing their hands after they go to the bathroom, before eating, and periodically throughout the day.

Clean whatever comes home.

Groceries, packages, and anything else that comes into their home should be cleaned before being put away. Because certain respiratory illnesses can survive on packaging and other surfaces for several days, cleaning and disinfecting them is highly suggested.

Take care of your mental health.

We’re living in a time unlike any other. From not seeing friends and family to staying inside for long periods of time, this is a stressful time for many seniors who are feeling more isolated than ever. Encourage your loved one to take care of their mental health by:

  • Not spending their entire day watching the news or reading about the pandemic. While it’s important to stay informed, spending too much time listening to updates can be upsetting.
  • Taking care of their body. Eating well and exercising responsibly has never been more important.
  • Staying in touch with others. Keeping in touch with friends and family can be hard for senior citizens who don’t have access to the latest technology. Make sure to call your loved ones often and even consider teaching them how to use some of the latest tech.
