People are Leaving Corporate America in Pursuit of Other Opportunities

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, a total of 11.5 million workers quit their jobs during the months of April, May, and June 2021. The total was so high that this period has been deemed “the Great Resignation.”

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has affected every aspect of our lives, including our professional careers and future. As millions of people transitioned to remote work, they began to reconsider what they prioritized and ultimately wanted out of their job.

The Effects of COVID-19 on American Workers

Prudential, the large global financial services giant, surveyed workers, and the results are astounding. “Some 48% of Americans are rethinking the type of job they want post-pandemic.”

Nearly 25% of employees are planning to look for new professional opportunities when the pandemic is over. It’ll come as little surprise that compensation was one of the top reasons why people want to leave. However, many reasons were emotionally-driven:

  • 38% of the survey group said they wanted a better work-life balance;
  • 34% said they were leaving due to limited growth opportunities;
  • 24% said their motivation for leaving is that they’re tired of working on the same projects;
  • And 23% are looking for new work because they don’t currently feel challenged professionally.

The survey also found that roughly half of U.S. workers reconsidering their jobs are willing to learn a new skill if it will allow them to work in a different industry.

The Push Towards Entrepreneurship

In a recent paper, economist Jon Haltiwanger noted that the pace of new business applications surged in the second half of 2020 and has continued through May 2021. Though the earliest available data only dates back to 2004, the pace of applications since mid-2020 is the highest on record.

In-Home Care is In-Demand

With life expectancy in America at an all-time high and more seniors wishing to live at home for as long as possible, the demand for in-home care has been expected to increase in recent years. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has exponentially reinforced how important and necessary in-home care is.

The in-home care industry has been growing for years. And over the past two years, the demand has only increased due to families’ COVID-19 concerns. The increased demand for home care agencies has been noted alongside a drop in the census at nursing homes, as the facilities continue to be a focus of pandemic concerns.
